Music and Architecture 2

The existence of music as part of our daily routine. The places we go, the steps we take..Making architecture more fun and interactive thereby allowing people to befriend and relate to the spaces/construction around, rather than concidering them nothing more than still blocks.

You Fade To Light

In 2009 rAndom International was commissioned by the Philips Lumiblade team to create an interactive light installation. You Fade To Light captures the unique qualities inherent to their revolutionary new OLEDs.

Lumiblade OLEDs are large area diffuse light sources made from extremely thin glass and feature a perfect mirror finish. OLEDs are the closest to the temperature of natural light.

“You Fade To Light” by rAndom International allows the audience to engage with the light itself intuitively and in a physical way. With custom software developed by designer Chris O’Shea, it has been built in London with several hundred unique OLEDs from the world’s first-ever production line for OLED lighting at Philips in Aachen, Germany.

Message from the director Mathias Woo:

“We live amongst architecture, but our understanding of architecture always remains in the economic dimension. The essence of architecture is not economy, but art. Architecture is everywhere, in every aspect of our world of the senses: sounds, colours, smells, lights and the air. Architecture has always been considered as art in Chinese and Western traditions; and has created various aesthetic systems for spaces. Both the Chinese Siheyuan or quadrangles and the Western gothic churches use architectural spaces to draw relationships between men, heaven and earth. However, with the globalisation of capitalism in the last decades, under the environment of our economy being dominated by the market, architecture all over the world has become more integrated, serving for economic benefits only, and focusing solely on monetary returns.

Architecture should only be art, and nothing else, just as cinema should only be art. Economic benefits should have evolved out of artistic effects; but now the nature of architecture is distorted by the market. If the true nature of architecture is lost, and architecture is no longer art, then architecture is no longer architecture. What we are left with is luxury apartments and properties for sale and speculation.

What is the meaning of architecture for the human race, without the art of architecture? What is the meaning of architecture when architecture does not evolve out of art?

Architecture is Art Festival will re-examine architecture from an artistic point of view, manifesting various artistic possibilities of architecture with different art forms.

In the Architetcure is Art Festival the most interesting part is the model showing the new development project of Hogn Kong West Kowloon. The model didn’t only show the changes of the area but also allowing visitors to leave comments and ideas to improve the development project.

Looking For Mies Excrept

“Looking for Mies” is a multi-media architectural music theatre about the life and works of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, using theatre space to explore the different theories and concepts of architecture by integrating digital arts, sound, music and installation to generate a new form of theatre experiment. It is a performance experimenting Mies’ ideas in relations to theatre space and the creativities of electronic music and multi-media installation.
